This year’s Future Rail Skills Forum, hosted by the National Transport Commission and the Australasian Railway Association in Melbourne, stated that the government was ready to spend up to $155 billion total in the next 15 years for modernised, emissions-free rolling stock, railway grid and railway technology.

Hiring more skilled workforce to man the network down the road are needed, especially women and the youth — with an estimated 70,000 people.

The National Rail Skills Hub lamented that current training programmes by private training companies catered to existing rail industry employees. However, their certifications might not be accepted into other segments, such as transition between cargo and passenger train operations.

The Forum also noted that digital proficiency was also an issue. An expected 54 per cent climb in demand for rail workers with digital technology skills projected by 2028, and 40 per cent of existing employees may be in line for training in new tech skillsets.
